Travel Critique Assignment: A Student’s View of the RailPark

By Abigail Markel

Welcome back to another edition of “A Student’s View” series, where I share insights from my recent journey to the RailPark. As a student at Western Kentucky University, this adventure was part of a class assignment, and we are eager to share her observations with you.

Exploring the RailPark Experience

The Historic RailPark & Train Museum provides a captivating exploration of the history of rail travel in the United States. Nestled within Bowling Green’s former train depot, this attraction comprises a two-level museum and five authentic train cars, each offering a unique learning experience.

Appealing to Homeschooling Families

The RailPark is particularly enticing for homeschooling families with children aged 3-7, especially those from mid- to upper-middle-class backgrounds residing within an hour’s drive. As a homeschooler myself, I appreciate the blend of entertainment and education that makes the RailPark an ideal weekend destination for families.

Key Highlights of the RailPark

  1. Historic Railcars: The opportunity to tour authentic railcars is undoubtedly a highlight of the RailPark experience. Stepping aboard these vintage carriages provides a unique and immersive insight into the bygone era of rail travel.
  2. Self-Guided Museum Tours: The flexibility of self-guided tours allows visitors to explore the museum at their own pace. This enables a deeper dive into the rich history of rail travel, from its humble beginnings to its modern advancements.
  3. Model Train Area: For a delightful break from structured learning, the model train area offers pure entertainment for visitors of all ages. Watching the miniature trains in action is not only enjoyable but also a reminder of the enduring fascination with railways.

Engagement Through Ritual-Like Activities and Dialogue

At the RailPark, engagement is cultivated through Ritual-Like Activities and Dialogue:

  • Ritual-Like Activities: Visitors are transported back in time through immersive experiences such as sitting on original depot benches and experiencing simulated train movements. These activities foster a deep connection to the rich history of rail travel.
  • Dialogue and Discussion: Expert-led tours encourage interactive dialogue between guides and visitors, enriching the learning experience. Interactive exhibits featuring former railroad employees further enhance engagement, allowing visitors to feel connected to the past.

Throughout the tour, visitors are encouraged to engage in dialogue with tour guides, fostering a dynamic exchange of questions, memories, and insights. Interactive exhibits featuring virtual conversations with former railroad employees enhance the overall learning experience.

By blending immersive experiences with opportunities for dialogue and reflection, the RailPark offers a captivating educational adventure for visitors of all ages. Whether reminiscing about past train journeys or imagining life on the rails, guests depart with a newfound appreciation for America’s rich railroad heritage.

Thank you for joining me on this enlightening journey through the RailPark. Until next time, all aboard!
